Artist Statement
As I age, my recent memories are still sharp. Those from the past leave me in doubt.
I go back to my image files in awe: ‘That’s mom; that’s someone I don’t remember; that was someplace that I must’ve been; that’s a beautiful moment of which there are no words.’
To be in an exhibit with others is for me to say, ‘Here are things that look like pictures but they are me reaching for those aging memories.’
As artists, we engage in the kaleidoscope of life. If we are ‘good,’ we scrape away the noise and leave an impression that compels a viewer to stop and wonder. And if we are really ‘good,’ the viewer may say, ‘that’s me.’ The ‘that’s me’ can be an elephant, a fantasy, an impossibly tall mountain, the sorrows of war ─ or it can be Joe’s memory. If you wish, take one of my memories with you.
